Understanding Neck Pain

Neck pain is a symptom rather than a diagnosis. It can come from muscles, ligaments, joints, discs or nerves of the cervical spine — sometimes in combination. Because the source can vary, an in-person evaluation is the appropriate first step.

Common Factors Associated With Neck Pain

  • Prolonged forward-head or screen-related postures
  • Sleeping positions and pillow support
  • Muscle tension and overuse
  • Joint irritation or stiffness
  • Prior injury, including from motor vehicle collisions
  • Radiating symptoms into the shoulder or arm

When Should Neck Pain Be Evaluated?

It is reasonable to schedule an evaluation when neck pain lasts more than a few days, keeps returning, limits daily activity, or follows an injury or motor vehicle collision. Severe pain after major trauma, progressive weakness or numbness in the arms, coordination changes, difficulty speaking or swallowing, or severe headache with neck stiffness and fever should be evaluated urgently by a medical provider or emergency department.

How We Evaluate Neck Pain

A neck pain evaluation typically includes a discussion of your history, an examination of cervical range of motion, orthopedic testing, neurological screening and posture assessment. Imaging is ordered only when it is clinically indicated. Findings are reviewed with you before any care is recommended.

Chiropractic Care for Neck Pain

When findings support it, care may include cervical adjustments, low-force techniques for patients who prefer them, soft-tissue therapy, targeted rehabilitation and posture guidance. Care is individualized. Outcomes and timelines vary and are not guaranteed.

Neck Pain After a Car Accident

Neck pain that develops after a collision — even a lower-speed one — deserves a focused evaluation. See our auto accident injury care page.

Is Neck Pain the Same as Whiplash?

Not necessarily. Whiplash refers specifically to a neck injury caused by rapid back-and-forth motion of the head, most often during a rear-end collision. General neck pain can have many other causes. If your neck pain started after a collision, see our whiplash chiropractic care page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can chiropractic care help neck pain?

Chiropractic care is a common non-drug, non-surgical option for many types of mechanical neck pain. Whether it is appropriate for you depends on the findings from your evaluation. Some presentations are better served by, or require, care from another provider.

What causes neck stiffness?

Neck stiffness commonly relates to muscle tension, joint irritation, sleep positions, prolonged screen postures or prior injury. An evaluation helps identify what is contributing in your specific case.

Can poor posture contribute to neck pain?

Yes. Prolonged forward-head postures at phones, laptops and desks can load the muscles and joints of the neck and upper back over time. Posture and ergonomic guidance are commonly part of self-care recommendations.

Can a car accident cause neck pain?

Yes. Motor vehicle collisions frequently involve rapid head and neck motion that can affect the muscles, ligaments, joints and nerves of the cervical spine. Post-collision neck pain should be evaluated.

What is the difference between neck pain and whiplash?

Neck pain is a symptom that can have many causes. Whiplash is a specific type of neck injury caused by rapid back-and-forth motion of the head, most often during a rear-end car accident. Whiplash usually involves neck pain, but not all neck pain is whiplash.
